ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a self-taught artist who has spent years studying, observing and perfecting my craft. I attended two years of college courses studying perspective, figure drawing and art history. Learning to paint was another challenge, much of it trial and error. I joined watercolor groups and attended many classes. These work/study programs and learning from more experienced artists improved my skills greatly. Painting with these groups "en plein air" resulted in my work taking a major step forward. At that time, I painted landscapes and painted almost exclusively using watercolors.

For many years, I regularly traveled once or twice a year to Tucson. I took up my brush and joined artists painting western landscapes. The experience enlarged my palette and created another challenge. These watercolors resulted in a beautiful look of deep blues and purples with yellows and oranges of the desert and the mountains.

I spent a very important part of my youth in Denver which sparked an early interest and love for western landscapes and the beauty of western art. This has developed into an appreciation for the creations of other cultures such as Mayan art, Indian art, African art and, finally, Cro-Magnon cave art.

When my paintings became inspired by Cro-Magnon cave art, I switched from watercolor to oil and acrylic. I have found new satisfaction and enjoyment experimenting with different materials to create textures on canvas. Again it was not easy and the results were not an immediate success. Pre-historic cave art, its history and the paintings have totally involved my spirit of the past bringing it to the present. It has been the happiest experience of my painting career.

Because of my interest in Cro-Magnon art, I have visited the caves in southwestern France twice and have developed a renewed interest in French culture and language. I have developed a slide show based on my paintings along with historical material about cave art. I have given lectures and presented my slide show to school groups. I have displayed my art at Alliance Francaise in Washington, DC in November 2002.

My art inspired by Cro-Magnon cave paintings is the focus of my recent exhibition, L?Art Prehistorique, at the French Embassy in Washington, DC during May, 2002. I opened a new studio in Baltimore during the Summer 2002. I can be reached at 443-413-9696.
